 THE MAIN FESTIVALS IN THE JEWISH CALENDAR:

 

 

FESTIVAL OF TREES., Tubshevat.
Movable festival at the start of February. The fruits of trees are eaten, that is figs and almonds.

FESTIVAL OF PURIM, Adar.
In homage to Queen Esther who saved her people during the exile: One dresses up in costumes, decorate carts with flowers to parade in the streets, singing and dancing.

PASSOVER, Pessah.
This commemorates the deliverance from Egypt. For one week they eat unleavened bread. On the seventh day families ate the Seder supper.

PENTECOST, Chavouoth-7 days of feasting after Passover.
Hommage is paid to God for the 10 commandments given to Moses. This also is a celebration of the first harvests.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE, Tisha Be 'AV.
This is a day of feasting and prayers in memory of the year 209 BC when the temples were destroyed. They read the Book of Jeremiah and sang funeral chants.

JEWISH NEW YEAR, Roch Hachana.
This is the anniversary of the creation of man and also the day of judgment. Men pass before the Eternal to be judged by Him. Three books are opened: first the Just-second the Sinful, and third those in between. Even if judgment is passed at Roch Hachana, God waits 10 days after new year before giving sentence, so that men by prayer and repentance may be pardoned.

THE DAY OF PARDON, Yom Kippur.
10 days after the new year comes a day of fasting, prayer and repentance.

FEAST OF THE TABERNACLES, Souccoth.
This festival recalls the 40 days of wandering in the desert after leaving Egypt. They eat and sleep in cabins.

FESTIVAL OF THE LAW. Shemini Atzereth & Simhat Torah.
Two days of celebration for the sacred Law.

THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS, Hanukkah:
When the Jews chased the Greeks from Jerusalem, they wanted to purify the temple. However, all they found was a small flask of oil, which they were amazed to find burned for 8 days! During the festival they have processions at night, lit by torches and lamps.
